More Sketchbook Excerpts

This lady looked like a who from Dr. Seuss.  My friend said I shouldn't tell her that.  I always kind of thought looking like a who was a compliment.  Maybe I'm wrong.

I imagine that everyone on this page is obnoxiously reading over this man's shoulder.  Except for the guy in the top left.  He's just amused by the whole thing.  Reading man is doing his best to ignore them.

Morris Lessmore World Premiere!

I am more than happy to announce that our (Moonbot Studios) first film (The Fantastic Flying Books of Morris Lessmore) will be premiering at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival (woo-hoo!) in just a matter of weeks!

You can check out the schedule at the SBIFF website.  We are in the "animation 2" qualifying category.  Everyone that worked on this project did an amazing job, and I think that it really shows.  But don't take my word for it, go see it yourself!

Some Sketchy Stuff

I've been slowly going through Mark Kennedy's blog, Temple of the Seven Golden Camels, and in March/April of 2007 he posted some really good stuff on sketchbooks.  I would definitely recommend checking it out (honestly, the entire blog is full of awesome stuff).  There are links to those specific posts down at the bottom.

One part that I thought was really cool from what he says is this little paragraph:

"Any real sketchbook is full of misfires, false starts and stumbles, with a few successes sprinkled here and there. If you were capable of doing a perfect drawing every time, you wouldn't need to carry a sketchbook! But the quickest way to learn how to do perfect drawings is to do a lot of crappy ones first...and learn from them. "

There have definitely been times where I have been hesitant to whip out my sketchbook because I didn't think the end product would be up to par.  But that's silly.  That's like saying that I want to learn how to play the guitar, but I'm not good enough to practice yet.

So yeah...with all that being said, here's some random stuff from my sketchbook:

This guy was really cool looking.  I don't think I ever quite captured him, but I sure tried!

I draw way too many floating heads.  MORE FULL BODY GESTURES!!

New Year's Resolution # 672: I will not let fear nor pride get in the way of sketching!

New Year! New Blog!

Welcome friends, family, foes, and strangers!

I have decided that in conjunction with this new year it was time for a new blog!  Well, actually it's the same blog, per se, I just deleted everything and started over.  If you're really interested in seeing any of my old stuff, I just copied it over to this amazingly original and inspired blog: Jason's Old Blog.  It's less a blog, really, and more of just a storage space for my old stuff since I don't like to throw things away.

I'm not quite sure what I want this blog to be yet, evidenced by my indecisive blog name.  But I realized that I could spend forever trying to figure that out and never actually get to posting anything.  So I'm just going to let it grow on its own, and not try to force anything...and if I don't like it, I'll just kill it and have it stuffed liked the last one, put over my mantel, and start over.

Here's to a new year, full of learning and growing!
